On November 16, as is learnt from the Haishu District Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau that the historical building of Tu Youyou's former residence (Tu Youyou Former Residence Exhibition Hall) in the Haishu District has been successfully selected as an outstanding case in the urban and rural historical and cultural protection, inheritance, activation and utilization category in Zhejiang Province 2023, making it the first in the entire district.
It is reported that Tu Youyou's former residence became an exhibition hall after a major renovation in 2015, with a construction area covering 1,347.5 square meters, and was selected as one of the first batch of scientist spirit cultivation bases recognized by the China Association for Science and Technology. The entire building embodies the essence of traditional Chinese architecture and incorporates some Western architectural elements. The main building faces south with its back to the north, adopting the form of traditional Chinese residential compound courtyards. Especially, the second floor of the hall and the stairs use wooden railings, which are ancient traditional folk handicrafts and often appear in residential buildings built during the Republic of China era. The second-floor corridor board is decorated with rolled grass patterns, which are one of the traditional Chinese patterns. The pattern of the window pane is composed of symmetrical reverse curved lines, which is also a characteristic of the Republic of China era. Within the building, typical Western architectural elements such as circular arches and pointed arches can also be seen, which are successful examples of the revitalization and utilization of historical buildings.
"The Haishu District is rich in historical architectural resources, with a total of 326 historical buildings within the entire district. A considerable portion of them are located within the historical and cultural blocks of Moon Lake, the Xiushui Street, and Fufushi Yongshou Street, which have high historical and cultural value." A relevant person in charge of the Haishu District Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau said that in the future, the Bureau will actively guide owners and users of historical buildings to strengthen the repair, protection, and activation of historical buildings, further explore new experiences and models in historical and cultural protection and inheritance, and contribute to the promotion of urban and rural historical and cultural protection and inheritance in our district.
